Omapendafule Kindergarten (Omundudu, Ohangwena region - from 2016 to 2020)
Omapendafule is a small kindergarten located in the village of Omundudu, in the Ohangwena region at about 40 km from Oshakati, in Norther Namibia and not far from the border with Angola. The first clinic is 5 km away, as is the kindergarten, the first secondary school is instead at 13 km far away. In the village live elderly and young people, adults, and children. The young people who today are still in Omundudu are those who have not passed the 10th and 12th grade or who have left school. Those who have passed the 12th grade, unfortunately, have not had the opportunity to continue their studies due to limited financial resources. Most of the villagers do not have their own income because the region's economy is based mainly on the cultivation of wheat, beans, corn, peanuts and mahangu (millet) and on animal farming (cattle, sheep, goats, pigs and donkeys). The village has about six hundred inhabitants.
The kindergarten is in a typical african village where there is sand instead of paved road and where the houses are built with straw and mud; the light of the day marks the hours of work (in the village there is no electricity) and people live with what the land can offer them. Omapendafule in oshiherero means "brave" in memory of the soldiers who died in the village in 1989, during the The Namibian War of Indipendence. The Kindergarten originally stood under a tree to shelter from the sun; the teacher and the children were used to write in the sand with woods. There was no blackboards, no tables, chairs, books and other school materials. In 2010, the local community organized a small fundraiser to buy a sheet metal roof and three walls of the same material.
In 2015, a woman from this village talking with our dear friend and sponsor Rocco G.M.T. , express of desire to help children of her own community by creating a safe place where they could receive an adequate education. Happydu, thanks to the relationship of trust and credibility towards Rocco G.M.T, has decided to realize this precious project.
The inauguration of the new kindergarten was on October 1, 2016 with a beautiful ceremony and the participation of some regional political representatives. Read the letter of appreciation.
From 2016 up to today: if the new kindergarten at the beginning welcomed 30 children, today there are 80 children coming from five neighboring villages. The children were divided into two groups based on age: the first group from 2 to 4 years and the second from 5 to 6 years. The kindergarten built by our Association soon became a very important place for all the families of the surrounding villages, so much so that they wanted to make their contribution (despite the few means at their disposal) to the construction of two small bathrooms for all the children. The community also uses the kindergarten as a room in which to hold meetings or experience moments of aggregation.
Satisfied with the result and the involvement of the whole village, Happydu Onlus became available to build a second classroom to welcome another 50 children, inaugurated in August 2018.
In October 2019, a few members of Happydu Onlus went to Omundudu to visit the children and to listen to the locals' request of building a pre-school, the first one being half an hour from there. Facing a great interest in education, we gave our availability to built it and it will be ready for the afternoon classes as well, soon. At Christmas Omundudu received the new wonderful classroom as a present.
Happydu Onlus provided the following aid to Omapendefule:
