Malawi: Chikondi's Kindergarten (Boli village, Salima - since 2018)
Chikondi was founded in 2002 by a young local teacher and it is a kindergarten that hosts 82 children. It is located in the suburb Mchenga Wamotosorge, in the village of Boli, near Salima, Malawi.
The kindergarten does not have a real classroom and the lessons take place in a disused and rather unsafe building. There are no glasses on the windows, toilets, nor tables or chairs, nor blackboard or other useful teaching materials.
Salima, which is about 110 km from the capital Lilongwe, is located not far from Lake Malawi, an important if not essential economic and subsistence resource for the local population or at least for those who live near the shores of the lake. The very large population of Malawi lives in conditions of extreme poverty: the country's economy is completely inadequate to meet primary needs for children and adults. The streets are always crowded with people who travel long distances on foot or by bicycle to get what they need to survive. That's is way thousands of children, along the way, try to stop cars to sell any kind of good to passengers.
Happydu ETS came into contact with this touching reality during the Charity Rally (Put Foot Rally ed. 2018) which was attended by Happydu Onlus' President and Treasurer. Our organisation, in December 2018 decided to support this project by purchasing tables, chairs and school supplies for Chikondi kindergarten, as a small but significant help to the children experiencing extreme discomfort.
The joy of these children and of the whole village made our Organisation proud to have once again succeeded in making its small contribution about education in the world.
